The Moose Plan

December 22, 2017

You guys!!!!!!!!!!! My moose skull and cape have finally arrived from Canada! In case you missed the Live Video of it’s arrival I shared on my Instagram page, I’m sad to have to tell you that you missed it. I was so excited I forgot to hit the save button, so there is no going back to watch it. But let me just tell you how excited I was…ECSTATIC! The thing is huge! I still cannot believe he is all mine! I still can’t get over the amazingness of that hunt and all that it meant to me! Now the only problem is, What in the heck am I going to do with him! How am I going to keep this memory preserved and displayed in a way that does justice to the experience that this was???

Many of you have asked or commented or suggested some good ideas, so I wanted to keep you all in the loop about what my plan is. First, I have to explain to you all that having the taxidermy work done on this guy is not going to be cheap and sadly, I don’t have a money tree growing in my backyard. So we are going to do this whole taxidermy project in baby steps. Like very tiny baby steps.

As soon as the crate arrived, the cape went to the tannery and the skull went over to my neighbor’s (Sutter Skull Works) to get bleached. I stained the antlers myself for now. Once, my pocket book recovers from the shipping bill and the tannery too, we will send the skull this spring to have the synthetic velvet applied to the antlers.  After that, aside from vaulting the ceilings in my house, the next step will be to keep him as a Euro Mount for the time being. As soon as I can decide where I’d like to display him as a pedestal mount, Connor (my buddy and amazing taxidermist) and I will start the process of mounting him and re-creating the landscape of the Yukon around him as well! It will be a pretty cool process and of course, I will keep you guys updated.

But, for now, I am just so excited to have him home and finally able to show my kiddos and Casey!! Let me know what you think about pedestal mounts. Even better, share a photo of moose mount you like in the comments below!
